I’ve always liked the Antiques Roadshow, it always amazes me with the some of the things that people bring in. Some are family heirlooms, some are great garage sale or thrift store finds and others are out right purchases for investment or just the pure pleasure of owining a piece of history. Where do we go to find good antiques at a good price?

Antique Stores
Craig’s List
Ebay
Estate Sales
Flea Markets
Thrift Stores
Yard Sales

Have an idea of what it is you are looking for, starting a new collection? adding to one? Looking for a furniture piece? Learn the types of antiques and the styles.

Does your interest lean towards  period pieces, art deco or national styles?  Learn how to identify these period pieces styles of antiques.

Maybe you fancy antique jewelry, antique books or antique toys. Whatever you are looking for you need to learn is how to tell an authentic from a reproduction.

There are several books available on that subject in general and also for particular items. If you do go to a antique shop before buying, ask questions.

You will find dealers will be very helpful. They do know the value of the piece they are selling so have a set amount to spend in mind.

If it seems a little high talk with them, they may be willing to lower the price if its a piece they have held onto for awhile.

If you are heading out to a yard sale or flea market, leave early! Most treasure hunters head out way before the typical masses do to get the best finds.

Ebay is a treasure chest itself. Many times people don’t realize what they have (same with yard sales).

With Ebay try miss-spelling the word slightly, look at auctions that are getting ready to end soon and not all finds that are antique are put in the antique section.

Whatever you do, have fun in your quest. And enjoy your new found treasure.
