I personally had never heard of a Portuguese Water Dog until earlier this week when the Obama girls brought their puppy home.It prompted me to see
what this breed is all about. (Dog shown is not the Obama’s dog). Portuguese Water Dogs ancestors were hard working canines who had an important role in the Portuguese fishing industry.

Known in their native land as Cao de Agua (literally meaning ‘dog of the water’), they were used to herd fish, retrieve lines and tackle, carry messages from one boat to another. Sometimes from ship to shore and would also guard the boat whenever necessary.

Portuguese Water Dogs get along great with children. They do not shed very much, but they do shed.

How big do they get?  The  Portuguese Water Dog standard: Male height 20 to 23 inches (at withers)  and weigh 42 to 60 pounds. Female height 17 to 21 inches (at withers) and weigh 35 to 50 pounds. They bond closely with their owners and always want to be by your side.

This isn’t an independent breed who can be happy left alone for long periods inside or out, and your Portuguese Water Dog puppy will want  to be an integral part of your family’s’ life. If you decide that a Portuguese Water Dog is the breed for you, take the time to find a responsible breeder and make sure they offer a health contract, always better to be safe than sorry.
